scam alert

November 2018
Ha
mpshire Trading Standards are alerting residents to a telephone scam they are concerned about.   The call purports to be from Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert, and states that the resident is entitled thousands of pounds back on an old PPI claim taken out on a loan or mortgage.   In order to secure the claim, there is an admin fee of £150 to be paid.
In one case, the resident was asked to buy an Amazon gift voucher to the value of £150.  Once purchased the caller would arrange for a representative to deliver the cheque in person to their home address and view the voucher.  A cheque number and reference number was given.

Money Saving Expert & Martin Lewis make it clear that they will never cold call people, and that this is a blatant attempt to scam people.  More information can be found on the Money Saving Expert web site.
Trading Standards suspect this is an updated version of the iTune gift voucher scam.  The scammers are after the code on the back of the voucher, which they can then sell online to recover the money.  Any cheque received by residents is likely to be fraudulent.
To inform Trading Standards about scams or to receive advice, contact our partners at the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06.  To report scams to the Police, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 20 30

Christmas Crime Prevention

20/11/2018

Dear residents,

I am writing to inform you that we have a couple of garages and sheds being broken into over the past couple of weeks with bikes and tools being stolen. Please ensure that your garages and sheds are appropriately secured and that any windows are covered so not to advertise the contents. This will greatly minimise the risk.

Burglary incidents are also on the rise again as we approach Christmas.
A secure home will reduce the chance of a burglary. Make sure windows and doors are locked every time you leave the house.

  • Don’t leave Christmas presents in view of a window.
  • If you are buying or receiving valuable gifts such as bikes, mobiles or electrical items register them for free at www.immobilise.com in doing so you will assist the police in returning your property should it be lost or stolen.
  • Dispose of present packaging carefully as empty boxes left outside can advertise that you have goods inside.
  • Refrain from keeping large amounts of cash at home.
  • Avoid leaving tools and ladders lying around that could assist someone get into your home.
  • When you go out at night make it appear that someone is home. Draw the curtains, and leave a light on. You could always put a lamp or radio on a timer switch.
  • Never allow people into your home unless you are expecting them or have made arrangements with the company beforehand.
Never buy goods and services at the door or give away personal information.

Have a wonderful and safe Christmas period,
